Had a great birthday last weekend. Peggy and I and the dogs
took our trailer down to Tombstone, AZ. I had not been to that part of
Arizona before. We visited Tombstone and Bisbee. GREAT
history down there. Much more than just the “gunfight at the OK
Corral.”
We took two different mine tours,
did lots of walking,
visited Boot Hill, saw the reenactment of the gunfight, and a funeral procession
down the main street – complete with the Arizona Brass Band.
Some wonderful shops in both towns and also some good restaurants. We will be
going back!
Last night I had the distinct pleasure of soloing with the US Navy Band
Commodores,
Prescott. It is a truly great big band that carries on the tradition of
big band music as well as any band in the world today. The military bands
are really part of only a handful of full time music performance jobs still left
anywhere.
In my clinics, I am always stressing to young people that if
they are interested in performing on their instrument and actually making a
full time living, the military bands are a great way to go. Especially if
they practice hard enough and become good enough to get into one of the main
bands in Washington DC. I am proud to have been a Navy Musician. (Went in
45 years ago.) I was in the original Navy Show Band, which doesn’t exist
anymore. It was even before the Commodores were started. Navy music
was a great training ground for everything I have done since in the music
industry.
